Today while browsing through the internet, I have  seen a word-“Leptospirosys”. I researched further and came to know that it is a bacterial disease. The responsible bacteria for this particular disease is bacteria of Leptospira  genus. It occurs in rodents, dogs and other mammals. This disease is also known as Rat fever, Field fever etc. Human beings are also affected by the disease. It can be really fatal. It is considered to be an endemic disease. This disease can spread in humidity------- rainfall. It spreads in warm weather. Changes in the climate effects the spread of this particular disease. We can say that the  spread of this disease is related to the weather of the particular area. In the monsoon season we can see the prevalence of this disease.Sources on internet says that this disease in humans was first described by Weil, who was the professor of medicine at Heidelberg  in 1886.This disease is also called Weil’s disease as per the name of professor Weil. This disease mostly affects farmers who have to work day and night in the field. It is thought that this particular endemic disease originated  in Asia. Leptospirosis  prone countries areBrazil, Cuba, Columbia etc. In India leptospirosis prone zones are Tamilnadu, Gujarat, Andamans, Karnataka, Maharastra.

2. How does Leptospirosis spread

Leptospirosis can affect us when we come in contact with the urine of animals that are infected by this bacterial disease. The urine of infected animals in water and in soil can spread this disease in human also. When a man wade through the water in monsoon on the road there is  a probability of getting infected as animal urine of infected animals is present in the water. A farmer has a high chance of getting infected with this disease because they work in field and use water  and the water may be contaminated with this bacteria.

  3.Leptospirosis syndrome

Now, you may be thinking about the syndrome of this  disease. Every one becomes eager to know how Can we all identify this disease and defeat it bravely. This bacterial disease can be fatal some times. The symptoms  of this particular disease can be classified in two phases. The first phase being acute stage, it is also called septicemia.A person who is infected by this specific disease, may not experience any Leptosymptoms or  the syndrome may also be mild. A victim of this disease may suffer from severity. Therefore, we can say that the syndrome may vary from none to severe. In the first phase, a person can have headaches, aches in muscles he/she can also suffer from vomiting, high fever, abdominal pain. The patient may also be the victim of jaundice, diarrhea etc.The patient’s  syndrome might also be mild as discussed in this blog before and this mild symotomp some times may be hard to recognize as Leptospirsis with these syndromes may also be considered as flue. Therefore, this symbol resembles to the syndrome of flue. The second phase of this bacteria borne disease is dangerous. It can seriously affect its victims. In the second stage, Kidney or Liver function may be damaged. It can lead to problems such as Meningitis, pulmonary hemorrhage etc. This disease is a kind of a night mare to all of us.

  4.    Incubation period

The incubation period of this disease is usually 5-14 days.

 5.     Cure of Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis can reach to the worrying level some times. It can be very dangerous at times and may even bring death. So, we all have to be very cautious. We should all try to awaken a self-awareness in order to protect ourselves, our families, friends from this disease. As it was discussed previously in this blog, that the signs of Leptospirosis is similar to a common flue. So, it can be very difficult to discover the disease at an early stage. Now, what should we do? Or how can we know that we are affected by this disease? We should not be fearful for this disease. Though ,some times it can be very dangerous but this rare bacterial borne disease is not  a threat to life in most cases. It is curable. You must visit a doctor at an early stage. Then your physician may give you some blood tests. Generally, some antibiotics like penicillin or others is charged. You should maintain proper hygiene.

We should not drink or use polluted water. We should always drink clean water and use clean water in order to get rid of this disease.

We should sanitize our houses properly and keep them clean.
